Robert Clive (1725-1774AD), or Clive of India, is without doubt one of Shropshire's most famous sons and particularly renowned for his heroic exploits in India. The BBC website has a section devoted to Clive which highlights various details of his chequered career and also states that he probably suffered from mental ill health throughout his lifetime before finally committing suicide.

Robert Clive, the Early Years

As a youngster Clive was expelled from three schools and caused his long suffering and impoverished parents a great deal of anguish.

Following on from early criminal exploits, which apparently included running a mini protection racket with local youths, it is fair to say that few people in Robert Clive's home town area of Moreton Say, near Market Drayton, would have been surprised to hear that the adult Clive had been either gaoled or hung.
